Mrs. Mary E. Johnson

Mary Johnson, 91, of Cortland, passed away Monday, May 1, 2017 in Dayton, Ohio. She was born on July 22, 1925 in Oneida, NY, the daughter of Louis and Sarah (Fullen) Cunningham. She attended St. Patrick's School in Oneida, and graduated from Oneida High School. She worked as a secretary at both Carrier Corporation and General Electric before deciding to become a nurse. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing, and also attended Syracuse University to become a Public Health Nurse. She married Robert Johnson of Cortland on June 17, 1961.

She enjoyed raising her children, and the neighborhood children as well. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, birthday parties, family picnics, camping vacations, rides in the country, walks in the park in McGraw, afternoon coffee breaks, and playing Yahtzee. She had a deep and unwavering faith in God, and an abiding love for her husband. She had a beautiful smile.

She is survived by her husband, Robert H. Johnson of Cortland; children, Catherine (John) Shay of Dayton, OH, Sarah (Dale) Gornic of Erie, PA, and Patrick (Crystal) Johnson of Cortland; sisters-in-law, Mary Metcalf of Phoenix, AZ, and Judith Johnson of Cortland; grandchildren, Caitlin Shay (fiancé, Geoff Hoehn); Sydney, Alayna, and Jacob Gornic; Alex, Harmony, Brenna, and Nate Johnson; sister Elizabeth Fowler of Gloversville, NY; and several nieces and nephews, and their families.

Mary was preceded in death by her son, Michael Johnson; sister-in-law, Aileen Johnson; and brothers-in-law, Max Fowler, Donald Johnson, Jim Metcalf, and Joe McLoughlin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Prayers of committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 5, 2017, from 5-8 p.m. in the Chapel of Riccardi Funeral Home, 69 N. Main St.,Cortland, N.Y. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's School in Cortland.
